Unfortunately, the reliability of UFO sighting reports can vary greatly. Many times, witnesses just aren’t sure what they’ve seen, or they simply misinterpret many of the key details. In most cases, what the witness observed can be identified as a man-made or natural phenomena.
As scientists, it is the job of UFO researchers and investigators to question everything. They question to seek out knowledge of the world. They question to consider the possibility that humans may not be the only self-conscious beings in this universe. They question to understand these UFO incidents and determine what can be explained and what is truly an unknown.
Our goal is to investigate these sightings using the Scientific Method beginning with observation, followed by data collection and analysis, and ultimately creating and testing a hypothesis. This scientific approach means asking all the right questions.
- Investigators verify the witness to ensure credibility.
- They gather as much supporting testimony from witnesses as possible. Legitimate photographs, videos or audio recordings are helpful in evaluating a reported UFO sighting.
- The more witnesses an investigator talks to, the better they will be able to put together a comprehensive picture of what happened. One witness, and little or no evidence does not make a very convincing case.
- They pay close attention to the evidence and determine whether what they are seeing is something that can be scientifically proven. They keep an open mind while investigating, but also thoroughly review and validate the information they’ve been given.
- Our investigators cross-reference cases in the MUFON database by date, description, size, and other details. They also establish if there were similar sightings or events in the past.
You too can be part of MUFON by becoming an official member. As a 501(c)(3) organization, MUFON also and has several underwriting opportunities so that the nonprofit group can continue research and further its mission, The Scientific Study of UFOs for the Benefit of Humanity.
