One standard UFO report detail is the object’s size. Despite their shape – ranging from classic discs and triangles to spheres and balls of light – most UFOs tend to be in the 10 to 30-foot length range. But over time you see witnesses logging in cases where they describe very gigantic objects and often compare size to a football field.
From 241 reports listed in UFO Cases of Interest: 2018 Edition, there are two cases where the witness used the “football field” term in their object description. Both objects were under 500 feet as the witness watched.
A Maryland witness at Boonsboro reported watching a low flying, blimp-shaped object, according to testimony in Case 86700.
The witness had just dropped off his son's girlfriend and was leaving her house at 8:35 p.m. on September 13, 2017.
“I got to the stop sign and was looking left,” the witness stated. “No cars. Looked right. No cars. I looked back to the left and noticed a dark object floating at my 11 o’clock position. I sat at the stop sign a minute, kind of dazed and wondering what the heck was I looking at. The object was dark, and I could only make out the outline of its shape when I saw the red lights on either side (left and right) blink. It looked like a football field size and was really low to the ground.”
The witness also described the object’s lighting configuration.
“I also noticed a white light blinking on the top and bottom of what I was seeing. I was thinking that whatever it was would surely crash so I turned onto the route and continued to watch it. I turned off the radio in the car and rolled down the windows, I couldn't hear any engines. Nothing. I was on a ‘country’ road, so there were no other cars at the time to interfere sound or sight wise.”
The witness pulled over and watched the object slowly float towards the southwest.
CAG Investigator Fred Kohler for Maryland MUFON closed this case as an Unknown – Other.
“From time-to-time you find a case that just has all the facts either stated or checked off and there are really no questions I could have asked her that she didn't have the facts stated either on her attached sketch, CMS or statement,” Kohler stated in his report. “Too bad everyone doesn't fulfill their reports like this. In any case I checked to see what kind of configuration of lights that blimps have, and it does not relate to what she explained. I believe she saw something unexplainable and I honestly can't disprove her at all.”

A North Carolina witness at Wake Forest reported watching a helicopter chasing a massive, oval-shaped object, according to testimony in Case 87012.
The witness was outside at 10:10 p.m. on September 28, 2017.
“I live in a rural area approximately 20 miles northeast of Raleigh, NC, near the town of Wake Forest,” the witness stated. “My daughter had been over for dinner and as she was getting ready to leave I escorted her outside to her car. We were standing outside carrying on a conversation when, in the distance, I heard the approaching sound of a helicopter. As I looked toward the sound, I see the lights of the helicopter approaching. And by the way they were blue.”
The witness was unsure of discerning how far away an object is in the sky.
“Sometimes objects are farther away than they might initially appear. But I could clearly see the helicopter and it was facing broadside to me as we were watching it. And at this point the helicopter was hovering – I’d say perhaps for maybe 20 seconds or so. It then began to turn to the right towards our position and began to accelerate very rapidly.”
The witness also noticed that the helicopter seemed to be a large, twin rotor aircraft.
“My sense was that it was military. And I could plainly see blue lights both fore and aft on the helicopter. One thing that struck me was that the helicopter was flying extremely fast for something with rotors. But as the helicopter passed by us, I exclaimed to my daughter, ‘That helicopter is chasing something.’ So, my best observation of what I saw was something like a yellow, round, faintly glowing orb or ball way out in front of the helicopter that it was trying to catch up to.”
As they followed the helicopter going by left to right, they could see the moon in the distance.
“And only because, at that moment, the moon was lighting the sky could we see what the helicopter was chasing – a massive, black craft or, rather, what I would describe as an oval-shaped craft much larger than a commercial airliner, perhaps the size of two thirds of a football field. The craft was not completely round but more of an oval shape. We could clearly see it, although the sighting lasted only four or five seconds. There were no wings and absolutely no sound from it, the only sound being from the helicopter. I would estimate the helicopter was four to five hundred yards behind the craft. Here's another observation, really just a gut feeling. The helicopter was chasing the craft as opposed to escorting it. I don't know why but that's just the sense I had. I think probably because they were both traveling at such a high rate of speed.
North Carolina MUFON Field Investigator Robert Barrett and Chief Investigator John D. Pizzo closed this case as Unknown Aerial Vehicle.
“Although the witness has given a somewhat sound account of his sighting, with no evidence taken, and with myself visiting the area twice, it is possible he might have seen an object. But during his initial report to MUFON he described the craft as a yellow, round, faintly glowing orb. Then as it was in the moonlight, he described it as a massive, black object the size of a commercial airliner or the size of two-thirds of a football field. In a text message he stated that the yellowish orb might have been the front of the larger craft. Then in the same text message, he stated, ‘that after thinking about it, the helicopter seemed it might been have escorting the craft, instead of chasing it.’ He states that the pattern on the craft is now ‘just a couple of lines going across the top, sort of undulations going from top to back, but other than that, there were no discernible markings.’ On both my visits to the area, I was there for about 20 minutes each time during the day. The area is mainly farmland, with some trees, but an open area with good visibility of the sky. The witness states that there are hardly any helicopters that fly by, and that he is not really in the flight path of RDU airport. While I was there, I only noticed one airplane fly over, but more went off in distant directions. But if the craft was so large, why haven't any more witnesses come forward? Perhaps an inquiry with the local sheriff’s office is in order to see if they have had any calls on that craft.”
