Dateline: December 17, 2017: WASHINGTON, D.C., The Pentagon
The Pentagon officially announced December 17, 2017, that on the fifth floor of the Pentagon’s C Ring, a “secret” study called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) existed beginning in 2007. Officially it was discontinued in 2012 due to funding issues. However, its backers claim that the program remains in existence and portions of it are still classified. They say that for the past five years, UFO reports — from military sources — have been investigated while pursuing their normal duties. This is a story as much about American campaign donations, Pentagon fiscal budgets and national security secrecy as about Unidentified Flying Objects/Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UFO/UAP).
The AATIP, whose existence was not classified but apparently operated with the knowledge of an extremely limited number of officials, was the brainchild of former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada), who first supported the appropriation for the program with the assistance of the late Senators Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Ted Stevens (R-Alaska). The latter two, both World War II veterans, were similarly concerned about the potential national security implications, sources involved in the program claimed.
Reid initiated the program, which spent just under $22 million according to reports, through an earmark after he was persuaded in part by aerospace executive and hotel chain founder Robert Bigelow —a friend and fellow Nevadan — who owns Bigelow Aerospace, a space technology company and NASA contractor in Las Vegas, Nevada. Bigelow, whose company received some of the research contracts, was also a regular contributor to Reid’s re-election campaigns. Campaign finance records indicate donations of at least $10,000 from 1998 to 2008. Bigelow recently appeared on CBS’s 60 Minutes in May, about his belief that extraterrestrial beings are visiting Earth.
In the December 2017 issue of The MUFON Journal, I reported about the newly organized UFO research group called To The Stars/Academy of Arts and Science (TTS/AAS). This is an organization founded by Tom DeLonge with the mission of releasing “information on UFOs, paranormal experiences, consciousness and other mysteries.” As reported in December, Luis Elizondo was to be the new Chief of Security and Special Programs for TTS/AAS. As I reported then, Elizondo was the former director of a group studying anomalous aerial threats at the Department of Defense (DoD). Today, Luis Elizondo was announced by the Pentagon to be the former director of the AATIP. It seems that Tom DeLonge’s group has just taken a giant’s step up in legitimacy.
The Director Speaks
The former AATIP director, Luis Elizondo, told The New York Times he continued overseeing UFO investigations for another five years before tendering his resignation to Secretary of Defense James Mattis. "Why aren't we spending more time and effort on this issue?" Elizondo wrote in his resignation letter, according to The New York Times. 3
"I was honored to serve at the [Department of Defense] and took my mission of exploring unexplained aerial phenomena quite seriously,” Elizondo said in a statement. 4 "We tried to work within the system," Elizondo told POLITICO in a recent interview. "We were trying to take the voodoo out of voodoo science." After funding was discontinued, he worked out of his Pentagon office for the U.S. Navy and the CIA and resigned in October due to excessive secrecy and internal opposition.
US Navy UFO Camera Footage
Along with the Pentagon’s nationwide announcement, they released gun camera footage of a white, oval-shaped craft followed in hot pursuit by U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet fighters from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. These were apparently photographed in 2004 (the videos may be viewed at MUFON’s website). The newly-released footage taken by U.S. Navy aviators offers an inside look at this secretive government program that officially existed for five years. The Defense Department says it ended the AATIP program in 2012 due to funding issues. But a Pentagon spokeswoman said, "The DoD takes seriously all threats and potential threats to our people, our assets, and our mission and takes action whenever credible information is developed." 6 [emphasis added] Most of the sightings that the AATIP looked at were by U.S. military personnel, who have been reporting UFO sightings for decades.
An Alternate Viewpoint
Most readers will be aware of Dr. Steven Greer and the Sirius Disclosure Project. Some will have read his article, “When Disclosure Serves Secrecy.” 7 It is Dr. Greer’s contention that this revelation is part of a “False Flag” (Greer’s term) effort, or fake disclosure, to keep secret what may actually be in progress. 8 His opinion is that the announced AATIP program is an effort by some in the Department of Defense to create a false threat in the mind of the public, “. . . designed to prepare people for a threat from outer space.“ 9
Dr. Carol Rosin and Wernher von Braun were executives at Fairchild Industries, an aerospace company in the 1970s. Dr. Rosin, along with Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), introduced her bill titled U.S. Space Preservation Act of 2003. 10 Some will recall the claim by Dr. Rosin that Werner von Braun once told her that a series of false threats would be claimed by the Pentagon so as to generate unwarranted profits for arms suppliers and encourage “war mongers” (Greer’s term). Von Braun said that the first threat will be from the Russians, then from rogue nation-states/terrorists, then from asteroids and lastly from an extraterrestrial invasion. In the past 50 years or so, she has often thought of von Braun’s warnings about the misuse of space and an “Enemy List” that he said the American government was using to keep the media and public in support of Pentagon budgets. Could this be part of a “False Flag” threat as Dr. Greer has been suggesting to us for some years now?
So why did the Pentagon make this announcement — and why now? Of what significance should this be to us? Perhaps the news was released at this time due to Elizondo’s resignation and recruitment into TTS/AAS. As some believe, this may be another case of “soft disclosure.” On the other hand, if Greer is correct, it may be an effort on the part of the Department of Defense as a justification for additional funding. In any case, don’t assume that the USS Nimitz incident was a “real” extraterrestrial craft. It may have been one of ours. Or Russia’s. Or China’s. To this writer, the significance is that the DoD has confessed to being seriously concerned about UFOs and national security when they claimed that all UFO research ended in 1969 — 48 years ago. There’s more to this story . . . stay tuned.
MUFON Executive Director Jan Harzan is asking all MUFON members, as well as the general public, to write to their Congressional Representatives and State Senators in support of a full investigation into the USS Nimitz incident.
