The daily business of what you know as MUFON is a busy place. Start with a west coast Headquarters office and investigator-related field offices in all 50 states and in a growing number of countries. Add to the mix a steady flow of UFO reports into our online Content Management System (CMS) and an organized and always growing investigation unit. MUFON's mission also supports an always-growing number of research projects.
While all of that is going on, MUFON maintains a website with frequent updates, including a daily (Monday through Friday) news feed on incoming cases, a Trending Now list of new web content and hot linked content; a monthly 24-page, full-color Journal; a twice-monthly Newsletter; a weekly, one-hour radio show; serves as a content source for a network television show; and maintains an Archive that works with print, radio, television, film and documentary requests for MUFON asset rights, use and permissions agreements. MUFON also manages a social media presence, and additionally is active in growth projects involving research, membership and communications.
I work in a newsroom-style environment in a field office located in Scottdale, Pennsylvania - a stone's throw from the December 9, 1965, landing of an object known as the "UFO crash at Kecksburg." I interact daily with MUFON's Headquarters offices in Newport Beach, CA, and with Communications Department teammates in New York and Utah; additionally fielding calls and messages from around MUFON as needed.
There is no normal day in my office.
Executive Director Jan C. Harzan and myself generally first chat about 8:30 a.m. Pacific Time or 11:30 a.m. in my eastern time zone while Jan is driving to the Newport Beach office. What's the hot topic of the day? We reassure each other that production schedules are being met and we discuss the day's alerts and issues.
Fixed production schedules are maintained for the Journal, website, newsletter, radio and television production - but we additionally handle many daily activities - including requests made in emails, social media messages and phone calls from both internal and external sources.
I was interviewed this past week by the Times of London for a UFO topic of the day; and in the recent past by USA Today and Wired magazine. Radio shows around the country frequently call and want me for an hour or two. Hollywood calls so often that I imagine having future funding to hire someone to only handle Hollywood - or as we say in the newsroom, Hollyweird. Then there are the calls and email requests from filmmakers, authors, and other media wanting help with a project or asking to be pointed in the right direction.
Look out - we have a book publishing division re-launching in August 2015 with some exciting opportunities for ArcStar Books. I worked a decade of my life in professional book publishing developing books into domestic and international markets with one hit on the New York Times Bestseller List. I know what I'm talking about when I say this is an exciting adventure for MUFON about to unfold.
I guess it's all in a day's work - but it is seriously a busy industry.
And somewhere in the background someone is always throwing a stone at MUFON and wants to start a scuffle on the playground. We're actually operated by the CIA. We've been infiltrated by the NSA. Bigelow bought us. We sold out with the TV show. One of our Symposium speakers made millions from a recent Roswell Slide debacle.
And that was just Friday.
The business of MUFON is the UFO report and I can assure everyone that we are listening and reacting and growing daily in positive directions. The communications surrounding it is my business and I hope to be a positive voice who will speak out here in the future and tell you want is happening and how we are proceeding.
Change and growth is a slow process over time. Please visit MUFON for the first time - or re-visit MUFON at our website - mufon.com - and interact with us.
