2000: "UFOs in the New Millennium"

ABSTRACTS

John F. Schuessler - A Tribute to Walter H. Andrus, Jr.
MUFON's International Director Extraordinaire

Walter H. Andrus, Jr. (Walt) has completed thirty years as the Mutual UFO Network, Inc. (MUFON) International Director. When one thinks of MUFON, they automatically think of Walt and his wife, Jeanne. No tribute could cover all the things Walt has done for MUFON and all of the cases he has personally investigated. Nevertheless, this paper will serve to remind everyone of Walt's great contributions to the field of ufology.

Kevin D. Randle, Ph.D. - April 19, 1962 - The Las Vegas Crash

In April 1962, something was seen flying from New York toward Reno , Nevada , where it apparently turned, heading to the southwest, only to explode over Mesquite , Nevada . Eyewitness testimony from the center of Utah , Reno and Las Vegas , as well as documentation from the Air Force's Project Blue Book, various newspapers, and letters, suggest that the object was not a meteor as proposed, but something else. An examination of the eyewitness testimony, as well as the documentation, provides a strong case for the extraterrestrial. However, as we have learned in the last decade, eyewitnesses sometimes make mistakes, they sometimes see things are aren't there, and the enthusiasm of UFO researchers sometimes complicate the issue. With this case of a reported UFO crash, and with an examination of some other, important UFO reports, we begin to see a pattern that will help us answer some of our questions.

Bruce S. Maccabee, Ph.D. - Prosaic Explanations: The Failure of UFO Skepticism

"If I had found a single case that defied prosaic explanation, I would have rushed to my typewriter (now my PC) to write the most exciting story ever published by Aviation Week & Space Technology Magazine ." - in a letter from Philip J. Klass to Dr. Eugene Mallove

Stan Gordon - In Pursuit of Pennsylvania 's Mysterious Encounters

In more than 40 years of research into the UFO phenomena and other types of unusual encounters, I have found that a quick response to the investigation of such incidents has been most helpful in determining the true nature of what reportedly took place, and on occasion, finding interesting physical evidence related to the event. I have investigated multitudes of mysterious encounters from across the Keystone state, and find that most UFO sightings and other enigmatic events, when properly analyzed, are found to originate from a natural or from a man-made source. While I have not seen a UFO myself, after having spent years in the field conducting on-scene investigations, I am convinced that some UFO incidents as well as some other strange confrontations remain unexplained. I have experienced some unusual personal events while investigating UFOs and other mysterious incidents that I find difficult to discuss. Some individuals who have worked closely with me over the years are aware of these matters. In some cases, other people witnessed or experienced the events as well. It is my belief that the UFO phenomenon is much more complex than many researchers may want to accept, and there is likely more than one origin for the UFO cases that remain unexplained.

Linda G. Corley, Ph.D. - For the Sake of My Country
An Intimate Conversation with Lt. Col. Jesse Marcel, Sr . - conducted on May 5, 1981

This paper will present excepts from a 68-page manuscript transcribed from four hours of audio-taped conversation with Jess Marcel, Sr. and his wife Viaud, in 1981. This is Marcel's last in-depth interview prior to his death in 1986. This paper will reveal an artist's depiction of a drawing by Marcel, done during this interview, of a beam with symbols that Marcel, Sr. claimed he saw in the debris he picked up at the Roswell crash site. The paper summarizes the events that led up to this interview as well as the reason it took almost 20 years to reach publication. The paper provides results of research, conducted by the author, on the symbols Marcel drew, which he and his wife state resembled "Hieroglyphic" writing.

John Carpenter, MSW, LCSW

During the year of 1996, a friend mailed to me a videotape copy of a television show called Paranormal Borderline in which a brief segment featured a videotape which allegedly shows the unusual disappearance of a men - supposedly abducted by aliens. A security network of four surveillance cameras at a factory shows a man leaving work, followed by a blinding flash of light, a power surge and disruption in all four cameras, and then a return to normal surveillance on all four video screens. Approximately two hours later on the same night, the film depicts another power disruption followed by the sudden reappearance of the same man who had vanished two hours earlier. Down on his hands and knees, he vomits, stumbles to his feet and staggers off into the darkness.

Gerald E. "Jerry" Rolwes, Lt. Col. USAF Ret. - The Mystery of Aviano

On July 1, 1977 , Aviano Air Base, (AB), Italy experienced an encounter with a UFO. The object was first observed beyond the perimeter fence off base, northwest of the Victor Alert facility at approximately 3:00 a.m. The Victor Alert compound was a fighter aircraft ready alert facility where aircraft, crews, maintenance and support personnel were housed for the purpose of immediate launch of the aircraft in the event hostilities occurred with the Warsaw Pact countries. Aviano Air Base (AB), Italy is a shared NATO base operated by the USAF under the control of the Italian Defense Ministry. Aviano is currently the Headquarters 16 th Air Force and the 31 st Fighter Wing. Due to the downsizing of the United States Air Forces Europe and the Bosnian/Kosovo Conflict, the base has increased in mission and responsibility.

Colm A. Kelleher, Ph.D. - Research at the National Institute for Discovery Science

The history and mission of NIDS is briefly discussed. A summary of research programs and interests of NIDS is presented with the emphasis on research on aerial phenomena and animal pathology. Some future directions for NIDS are outlined.

Robert M. Wood, Ph.D. - Validating the New Majestic Documents

A number of different sources have provided document copies of varying provenance and quality. The documents appear to have been classified as part of a former top secret program by the code name of Majestic, with the code caveats MAJIC or MJ-12. The genuineness and authenticity of these hundreds of classified pages and thousands of other less classified pages from these sources is continually being assessed. Recent results of ink, paper, watermark, type, and typewriter dating show that many of them are almost certainly not modern forgeries, done with sophisticated computer equipment. The evidence for authenticity, based on numerous examples of scarcely known facts, is sometimes offset by an occasional unconfirmed anachronism whose explanation is unclear. Similarities of chirography and wording with authentic documents, together with an occasional inconsistent fact, pose some problems for the questioned document examiner. The only other viable explanation of psychological warfare against our enemies in the "early" years seems to be awkward and unconvincing. Given the certain reality of UFO crash retrievals from numerous witnesses and the near certainty that some documentation would have been created, the least unlikely conclusion is that the documents are essentially genuine in the story that they tell. The cover-up has been more sophisticated an in place much longer than most have speculated, and several pieces of new evidence point to an early cover-up strategy effectively at work shortly after the crash of 1941.

Stanton T. Friedman, M.S. - Roswell and the MJ-12 Documents in the New Millennium

As the original civilian investigator of the Roswell Incident beginning 25 years ago, I have had to watch a number of TV documentaries, read a host of books and articles and answer literally thousands of questions about the Roswell Incident and the many different Majestic 12 documents which I began work on in 1984. The internet has added to the burden created by questions after my lectures and during radio and TV interviews. There is no shortage of verbiage. Unfortunately much is malarkey. The story would make a good case study for experts in propaganda. Fortunately new evidence has been obtained to help deal with the deceit of the Air Force and several individuals therefore it is time to take stock of the situation.

Ted R. Phillips - Thirty-five Years of Landing Trace Cases

It has been stated that little, if any. Real evidence exists which could prove the case for Unidentified Flying Objects. While it appears to be true that proof is not available, there is tangible evidence available for study. If evidence exists, it should be found in the physical trace events-reports in which witnesses claim to have seen the landing or near landing of a unknown object and the disturbance of soil or plants at the alleged site. Such reports are available for study and analysis.

Gregory J. Avery, JD - Chemtrails and UFOs: Over My Back Yard

This presentation is a lecture, video, and photographic analysis of a target hypothesis that UFOs are involved, in some way with chemtrails and whether there now exists consumer level video camera systems technology that have the capability to see and record UFOs that would be otherwise invisible to the naked eye or to lesser video camera systems.
