1995: "Ufology: A Scientific Paradigm"

ABSTRACTS

Charles F. Emmons - The Ufology Experience: Daring to Study UFOs

Ufology has generally been defined as a deviant science since the Condon report in 1969. Consequently, there is little public support for UFO studies in academe and the government. This lack of funding prevents astronomers and many other scientists from taking ufology seriously in a practical sense in spite of their general acceptance of the idea. Most active ufologists, especially in a sample of MUFON consultants, have advanced degrees, have had their own UFO experiences, and have hidden their research involvement at least to some extent. Some ufologists, especially those who are experiencers, have a "sense of mission" allegedly related to the transformative aspects of the phenomenon itself.

Walter N. Webb - Encounter at Buff Ledge

The author has conducted an in-depth investigation into a dual-witness UFO abduction experience. This 1968 episode differs from most other multiple-witness cases in that (1) neither individual communicated with the other between the conclusion of the experience and the initiation of the investigation ten years later, and (2) the five-year probe into this incident makes it the most thoroughly investigated and documented of any single UFO abduction episode to date. Additionally, several potential secondary witnesses to the UFO's departure were located.

Karl T. Pflock - Roswell , A Cautionary Tale: Facts and Fantasies, Lessons and Legacies

The Roswell case is considered as a cautionary exemplar of the problems besetting UFO research. Examples of important aspects of the case which are not as they have been thought to be are given, illustrating important issues which need to be resolved, both with respect to the Roswell case and UFO research in general. The issues illustrated are further developed, and lessons to be learned are outlined. Elements of a corrective course of action are proposed.

Katharina Wilson - The Alien Jigsaw: A Fresh Look at an Old Puzzle

In this presentation I will share new information about abductions from the perspective of an abductee. I will use numerous slides and examples from my personal experiences that I documented in my book The Alien Jigsaw to describe abduction-related events such as: teaching dreams, visions, camouflage techniques, theatrical scenarios, and the possible involvement of government personnel. I will conclude with new information that occurred in 1995, and my personal thoughts concerning a new focus for research.

John F. Schuessler - Developing a Catalog of UFO-Related Human Physiological Effects

A significant number of UFO reports contain information suggesting that human physiological and psychological damage, animal reactions, and physical trace effects are caused by the UFO encounter. If this assertion is true, then we have an opportunity to provide the "proof" of reality sought by most researchers if we properly amass and utilize the results of the investigations. Important to researchers is the availability of historical data in a conveniently usable form. This paper describes a subset of the overall database - a catalog of UFO-related human physiological effects.

Joe Lewels, Ph.D. - Over the Rainbow - Quantum Physics Discovers the Holographic Universe

The last quarter of a century has seen a quiet revolution in the world of science that has brought scientists to the brink of a great chasm, spanned only by a rainbow. On the other side of that chasm lie the worlds of the mystical, the spiritual and the paranormal, where scientific methodology and objectivity break down. The implications of this holographic view of the universe are so profound that it shatters the Western mind's accepted understanding of reality.

First, with the discovery of the holographic image in the early 1950s, science unearthed the concept of Non Locality, a phenomenon that allows information to exist in all places at once, rather than in only a specific location. Next, in the study of subatomic particles, knows as quanta, scientists discovered a bizarre world that refuses to obey the laws of physics as layed down by Newton and Einstein. Subatomic particles, they found, also exhibit the property of Non Locality, seemingly able to communicate with each other instantaneously over vast distances. Perhaps even more perplexing was the conclusion that subatomic particles are intimately connected to the consciousness of the scientists observing them.

Physicists are still wrestling with the disturbing possibilities that the human mind is infinitely interconnected with the entire universe and that every electron may be encoded with the information needed to reproduce the entire universe.

Holographic principles have also been found by scientist studying the human brain. It has been discovered that memories are not stored in specific places in the brain, but rather everywhere at once. This holographic concept also seems to apply to vision and to human consciousness.

The holographic nature of the universe is leading scientists to an area of science previously shunned as being "non scientific": the world of the mystical and the spiritual. It has led some scientists to the realization that such things as synchronicities, intuition, mental telepathy, psychokinesis and other paranormal phenomena may indeed have a basis in fact and in science. And it has opened the door for speculation that there may be a more subtle reality underlying objective reality - a place where time and space simply cease to exist.

For Ufologists, this new understanding is both a blessing and a dilemma. The Holographic Model brings mainstream science closer to Ufology, but at the same time forces us to accept the paranormal aspects of the science we are studying. Ufologists may be no better prepared than other scientists to take the next bold steps into the unknown, where science, as we know it, leaves off and a new reality, beyond the rainbow, begins.

Linda Moulton Howe - 1994 Animal Mutilation Research Grant: Summary of Case Studies

The Bigelow Foundation of Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1994 awarded a research grant to investigator Linda Moulton How and John Altshuler, M.D., hematologist and pathologist, to study unusual animal deaths reported worldwide and known more commonly as "animal Mutilations."

Over twelve months, the research team coordinated with veterinarians, veterinarian pathologists, a biophysicist, and other professionals to conduct necropsies, tissue sampling from excisions, and collection of grasses at mutilation sites for analyses. The challenge was to reach an animal before excessive deterioration of tissue from necrosis. Out of eighteen case studies in 1994, one involved two steers in Eagle Nest, New Mexico , dead less than 36 hours which Dr. Altshuler and a veterinarian were able to investigate the same day the animals were found. Microscopic examination of excision tissue revealed that the hemoglobin had been subjected to high heat at the cut line. Cooked hemoglobin at excision lines has been a repeated finding in several unusual animal deaths studied since 1989.

Another finding discovered by biophysicist W. C. Levengood supports the hypothesis that an intense energy is focused at the mutilation sites. In pasture grasses sampled from mutilation sites in Garnett, Kansas, Chacon and More, New Mexico, and La Veta, Colorado, the respiration cells and cell pits of the plants show fundamental biochemical and biophysical changes which cannot be produced by simple physical force such as bending or twisting plants by hand or by wind or helicopter down draft.

A third area of discovery is the removal of internal body tissue and bone from mutilated animals. A Las Vegas , Nevada veterinarian confirmed that all penile tissue and a section of skull bone had been removed from a mutilated steer. Two other veterinarians near Kiowa, Colorado confirmed that most of the penile tissue had been removed from two buffalo found dead inside a locked corral with the same pattern of bloodless excisions that have been found in cattle, other domestic animals, as well as wild game such as deer and rabbits since the 1960s.

Michael D. Swords, Ph.D. - The USAF-Sponsored Colorado Project for the Scientific Study of UFOs

One of the most significant elements in the history of UFOlogy was the so-called Condon Project, centered at the University of Colorado in 1967-1968. This paper discusses the origin, methodological philosophy and overview of the research problem, the activities, results, and external impacts of this work. The paper finds a complex mix of personalities, attitudes, and theories enmeshed in political and social forces which predestined the project's conclusions and crippled its ability to make any scientific contribution toward the solution of the UFO mystery. Its resultant impacts were nevertheless formidable, both negatively and positively.

Dan Wright - Commonalities & Disparities: Findings of the MUFON Abduction Transcription Project

The most comprehensive study of alien abduction phenomena ever undertaken is presented, compiling dozens of characteristics across 142 separate cases submitted by 15 abduction researchers. Topics addressed include the means of capturing and transporting subjects; layout of the ships; entity appearance, behaviors and emotions displayed; reproductive and other procedures conducted; the presence of "hybrid" beings and other humans seen onboard; physical effects discovered after the fact; and much more.

Michael Strainic - Ufology in the Great White North

It seems that Canada has been the scene of paranormal activity forever, and its involvement shows no sign of abating. When it comes to the truly unusual, Canada has hosted it all: in addition to UFO reports of every flavour, and abduction cases in alarming quantity, we also have crop circles, animal mutilations, and peripherals such as Sasquatch, Ogopogo and other lake beasties, and the rest of the list of paranormal events. UFOs are seen over major cities. Abduction claims are coming in at an alarming rate from all parts of the country, including the very remote and very inhospitable North. We have found a great many poorly-made crop circles in our fields, but we have also found some stunningly beautiful formations that so far have evaded explanation. In our fields - and in our cities - we have found animals, quite dead, the victims of some unseen surgical wizard. And sometimes, events of this nature will team up and work in combinations. Yet with all of this activity, most of what is happening in Canada , the largest country on earth, remains unknown to the rest of the world. This paper will present details of some of these important, yet little-known, cases.

Stanton T. Friedman - Roswell Revisited

A great deal has been published and broadcast concerning the 1947 recovery of crashed flying saucers in New Mexico in the past three years. Much has unfortunately been nonsense or misleading. New imaginative, but false, scenarios have been created about the events and the people involved in them. Careful research has taken a back seat to research by proclamation. Considering the past history of deceit on both sides of the UFO question, that isn't surprising. But, when the U.S. Air Force, the New York Times , the Washington Post , the Associated Press, and Showtime all disinform the public with misinformation which they are unwilling to correct, it is time to set the record straight. This paper deals with recent discoveries and misrepresentations about many aspects of the Roswell , GAO, and MJ-12 story.

Michael P. Lindemann - Maps, Myths and Millennial Madness: Ufology Meets the End-Time

UFO phenomena are demonstrably significant in both scientific and societal terms. However, such phenomena continue to elude scientific tests of authenticity while at the same time making greater and greater inroads into the mythic subtext of human culture, particularly Western culture. While serious Ufologists strive to establish the facts about particular cases, UFO enthusiasts and experiencers are increasingly swept along by expectations of cosmic calamity, transformation and deliverance. It is not clear that scientific Ufology is prepared to cope with "Millennial Madness."
