PREFACE: The Todd Sees case is one that I have both discussed, and alluded to, on many occasions, both during radio programs, as well as at UFO conferences. As a result of this limited publicity about the case, the incident has become somewhat well-known among those people who follow the UFO phenomenon closely. However, aside from the five-page written summary about the event that was posted to the NUFORC website in September 2002, very little has been written about this interesting case, particularly with regard to its possible relationship to the field of ufology. For over a decade, I have advocated that the case still should be investigated, which at least two teams of investigators recently have begun to do.
This short article, the first of two, is my attempt to briefly summarize the case, such that the reader will be left with a general outline of the events surrounding the tragic death of Mr. Sees. It is by no means a complete, or even well-documented, rendition of the case, principally because of the difficulty NUFORC encountered in its attempts to secure accurate and reliable information about it from witnesses, many of whom elected to remain anonymous.
Also, all of the public officials whom NUFORC contacted, shortly after the case first came to our attention, were noticeably reticent about the case, and showed signs of not wanting to talk about it at all.
At approximately 5 a.m. on Sunday, August 4, 2002, Mr. Todd Sees, age 39 years, left his rural residence near Pt. Pleasant Township, Pennsylvania, on a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle, and drove approximately two miles to his family property, located near the top of nearby Mt. Montour. Mr. Sees’ intention in going there at that hour was to assess the deer population in the area, in preparation for the Pennsylvania deer hunting season.
Shortly after 5 a.m. on that date, a group of three fishermen, floating down the Susquehanna River, allegedly witnessed a disc-shaped craft, hovering near the top of Mt. Montour. They reported that during its presence above the mountain, they also witnessed a cascade of sparks, seen falling from the high-voltage wires, which run across the top of the mountain. They added that the disc suddenly moved a short distance, hovered there for a few seconds, and then shot off rapidly, disappearing in the morning sky.
A second witness asserted that he had observed the same craft, but that he also had seen what looked to him to be a “shaft of light,” which appeared to “connect” the silver disc with the top of the mountain. Moreover, the witness asserted that he saw what he thought was a man’s body being levitated upwards in the “shaft of light,” and that the man appeared to be clad only in undergarments.
Later that morning, when Mr. Sees had not returned home at the time he was expected, his wife sent their son up to the family’s property, in order to check on their husband and father. The son quickly found his father’s vehicle, parked on the property, but he could not find his father. Moreover, one source has reported that the son found what appeared to be Mr. Sees’ outer garments, neatly folded and laid on the ATV.
This discovery gave rise to a two-day long search for Mr. Sees, which included approximately 200 personnel, who used helicopters, wheeled vehicles, horses, tracking dogs, and volunteer searchers on foot, during the search.
Tragically, the search ended on the following day, Monday, August 05, when Mr. Sees’ son found his father’s body, possibly suspended in heavy underbrush, although the precise facts surrounding the discovery of the remains are still a bit unclear to independent investigators. The discovery was made at approximately 7:50 p.m.
I present below, in chronological sequence by the time and date of receipt, a few of the several reports we received about the incident, several of which were submitted by sources who elected to remain anonymous, and who provided no contact information.
1st REPORT: At 5:40 p.m. NUFORC received a report from an anonymous source, in which the person asserted that he (or she?) had been witness, two weeks earlier, during the early morning hours of Sunday, August 4, 2002, to a very strange event.
The reporting party described how he, together with three other witnesses who were fishing on the Susquehanna River, allegedly had been witness to a metallic-looking craft, seen hovering motionless above the peak of Mt. Montour, located in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. The source of the report also described that the witnesses had seen what appeared to them to be “sparks” dropping from high-voltage lines, which run close to the top of the mountain.
The report added that the event lasted for approximately 10 minutes, at the end of which the disc allegedly became very brightly luminous, moved suddenly a short distance to the west, and then suddenly shot almost vertically upwards, quickly disappearing from view of the four witnesses on the ground, and perhaps on the Susquehanna River, which flows along the base of Mt. Montour.
The source of the report, who apparently was a farmer, added that horses, possibly on his farm, seemed to him to be noticeably agitated, and they remained so for approximately 12 hours, following the event.
This first report was posted to the NUFORC website, UFOCenter.com, on August 28, 2002, where it still appears and can be read.
Here is the text of that first report:
The craft was seen on Montour Ridge on 8/6/2002 (sic. August 04th, 2002) at 5:30 in the morning by a farmer and also 3 fisherman on the Susquehanna River.
It was at the very top of the mountain on the western end, just hovering above the power lines. The farmer said it appeared out of nowhere, he could see some sparks flying from the tower and dropping to the ground.
The whole incident lasted about 10 minutes, then it (the object) got very bright and took off very low heading west, then it stopped and went straight up, it was gone in seconds.
The horses on the farm were very upset and nervous for about 12 hours.
2ND REPORT: At 9:04 p.m. (Pacific), on August 25, a week after the initial report had been submitted to NUFORC, we received a second, and more detailed, report about the incident, and like the first report, submitted by an anonymous source. This second report provided a great deal of information about other aspects of the same event, including the fact that witnesses had seen what appeared to them to be a man’s body, clad only in undergarments, being levitated upwards in what looked to them to be a “shaft of light!” Moreover, the report asserted that once the man’s figure arrived at the bottom of the craft, the witnesses observed it actually being taken into the bottom of the craft.
Here is an excerpt from that second report:
Farmer saw an object above Montour Ridge at the powerlines, on top of the mountain, it was round and very still over the lines.
Suddenly it moved what looked like a few hundred feet to the east, it stopped and a beam of blue and white light shined to the ground.
What was seen next was very unnerving, he saw what appeared to be a man suspended in the light, he was being pulled up head first, he was moving his arms slowly in the light. What looked like a man was pulled up into the bottom of the craft. A few seconds later and it started shuddering, then went west very fast stopped briefly, then went straight up and out of sight…
3rd REPORT: On August 29, 2002, the day after NUFORC had posted the two reports shown above, we received a third report from an individual, who provided his name and contact information. The source of the report asserted that some type of alien involvement had been involved in the case, and that there had been collusion on the part of the local authorities to conceal from the public facts pertaining to the case. I provide below partial text of this third report received:
I will be as brief as possible. A man named Todd Sees, was abducted and murdered by aliens on Montour Ridge, in Northumberland County, near the town of Northumberland, Pa.. This is a big sloppy cover-up if there ever was one.
Todd Sees the victim, lived at the foot of Montour Ridge, a mountain stretching over 20 miles east. Todd Sees went up the mountain to look for pre-season deer. He told his wife that he would be home by noon. He rode his 4 wheeler up the powerline behind his home at a little after 5:00 in the morning.
Noon came and no Todd, his wife and children became concerned, at 2:00 a search party was organized, local police, state police, paramedics, and 200 volunteers helped search for Todd Sees. The 4 wheeler was found on the top of the mountain near a powerline, tracking dogs could find nothing to go on around the 4 wheeler. The search went on for 2 days over 6 miles of mountain were covered, from top to bottom. Todd vanished with out a trace, the 4- wheeler was, keep in mind, 2 miles from his home at the foot of the mountain. A pond a few hundred yards from the house was even searched by skin divers just so they overlooked nothing. Dogs were over the whole area constantly no results, no trace...
4th REPORT: On, or about, September 12, 2002, NUFORC received an email from an anonymous, and apparently disgruntled, source, ridiculing our Center for not pursuing the Todd Sees case more aggressively than we had. The source of the email, it turned out, was a nurse, who had been on duty, at the time that Mr. Sees’ remains were transported to the hospital where she apparently was working at the time, and who therefore was able to provide a great deal of information about the condition of Mr. Sees’ remains.
Here is an excerpt from her report, submitted to NUFORC on September 14, 2002:
…The dogs never picked up his scent, nor found his missing clothes. The body was found on Monday night at 9 pm. So he’d been out in the heat and humidity for 39 1/2 hours. He should have been swelling from body gasses at that time. But he was emaciated (as per the ufo report. This has not yet been verified).
The 4 wheeler was at the top of the ridge. His body was found face down, 25 yards from his house. He was wearing only his boxers. There was a spot on his right forehead that was showing signs of decay, the rest of his body was intact. He was holding his throat (suffocating?) An allergic reaction to bee venom, could have cause his throat to close and he might have suffocated (but no bee stings found) And why call in the FBI for bee or snake bite? He had a red rag tied around his right arm and there was a dead rattlesnake beside him. They expected to find puncture wounds from a snake bite, but there were no puncture wounds any where. If he’d been snake bit…there would be a good sized blackened area of necrotic tissue, surrounding the punctures. As far as snake bite goes, this was a strong, athletic, 38 year old male. Rattlesnake venom would most likely NOT have killed him at all. He would have been able to find his way home in time to get to a hospital. With snake venom, he might have had some nervous system problems... disorientation, tremors etc.
The report that I heard yesterday was really bogus: “We think he was stung by bees, but because his body was so decayed you couldn’t see welts from the stings nor find venom in his system.” His body wasn’t decayed…and a toxicology report has not been filed. And if he were being stung, why would he remove his clothing? I’d jump on the 4 wheeler and head down hill.
There are two conflicting reports about the one shoe. UFO report says it was in a tree. The police report says beside the 4 wheeler. Why would he take off his shoe, (maybe so he could remove his bibbed cammy pants?) But if he did this, why would he leave the road? This is a very wooded area, hard to walk through. The road would lead straight home, yet he chose to take to the undergrowth and forest. There were no keys, no other clothing found.
When my friends (deleted) asked questions of Todd’s father, (deleted) told her that everyone was told they COULD NOT SPEAK ABOUT IT. (deleted) says his father, the wife, the son the friend (who both saw the body), are not talking and are still just ‘stunned’. I was told they’re acting very strange. no expressions, just scared and emotionless. The father did say that they don’t know any more than the general public.
Now... here’s the worst thing; If he was stung by bees or snake bit... why were special agents (they say FBI) brought in? Why did they take over? Why was no one allowed near the body? AND... no one was called to identify the remains. No one, not even the wife was allowed to view the body. There was a funeral, with a closed coffin. NO ONE WAS EVERY ALLOWED TO SEE THE BODY. The family has said they doubt that there was a body in the coffin…
In next month’s issue of the UFO Journal, I will continue my discussion of this interesting, and tragic, case, and will discuss the difficulty I experienced in trying to obtain accurate information, and in attempting to investigate the case.
