CASE # 36293
Investigator: Norman Gagnon - MUFON ID# 10061 STAR Field Investigator
Location: (Over) Chase City, Virginia – 15 minutes prior to landing in Richmond.
Date of Event: 2012-02-18
Time of Event: 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time
A father and his son John, both pilots, were in their Mooney Ovation 2 propeller-driven aircraft flying via IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) at a speed of 170 mph and at an altitude of 7,480 feet. Shortly after they crossed over the border of Virginia from Charlotte, NC, they were preparing to land in Richmond. While John was scanning the skies for air traffic, he unexpectedly saw a bright, glowing sphere flying alongside the aircraft. As the UFO began to soar dangerously close to their right wing, about 50 feet away, the plane lost power; and all of the electrical equipment including their computers suddenly turned off. A few seconds later, the plane regained all systems as the UFO swiftly shot away at an incredible speed.
No formal report was filed but the aircraft was inspected to ensure everything operated properly before they flew back home. His father basically refused to talk about the incident to anyone except immediate family members.
John is a military veteran, served in the Coast Guard and his father is a banker in his mid 50s.
