EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is Part 2 of an account that began in April 1974 when a young Newport News, Virginia, couple had an encounter with a UFO on their third floor balcony. After experiencing the green-colored ball of light the size of a bowling ball and a second object - they thought their encounter was over. But Stephen soon began having a series of “dreams” that could be interpreted as an alien abduction.
October came and things became strange. I generally do not remember dreams, and except for several nights I am about to detail, never awaken in a sweat or fright. Furthermore, I never had any sequencing dreams. However, in October 1974, about six months after our April encounter I began a series of dreams that continued for several consecutive nights.
The first night appeared minor. I was asleep and abruptly awoke after seeing the image of a face. It had a large, bulbous tan or beige head with large black eyes slanted upward where ears would be expected to be located. I saw no ears. The deeply dark eyes of the image were penetrating and threatening. I awoke and got up feeling a bit unnerved. I discounted the dream as being just a dream. I got up and splashed some water on my face. I looked at myself in the bathroom mirror and told myself the image was simply my imagination. Yet I wondered. The face I saw had great detail and appeared familiar and frightening. I shrugged off seeing this image and simply went back to bed and slept normally.
I did not tell my wife of this first dream. However, the next night the same face appeared. I intently looked at it as it glared back at me.
I remember attending classes the next day being unable to rid myself of this nightmarish image. It became even worse when I had to teach a class. Normally I pride myself as being a good teacher. This time I stunk. At the end of the day I rendezvoused with Lynne at a little coffee shop and told her more details of the image. At her urging I agreed to write notes of what I saw in these dreams. We returned to our apartment and did not speak of the visions.
Our efforts to forget what was happening failed. The continuing dream that I had the next night was extreme. I again fell into sleep and was confronted by the face of my nemesis. It was the same huge head and dark eyes, no ears, and the tiny holes ever so slightly protruding from its face to form nostrils. I searched the face and detected a very small slit where the mouth should be. It was centered low in its head between two very narrow jaws. There appeared no lips. I remember thinking how it could eat with such a small mouth and jaws. The eyes of the image then demanded my attention and I sensed a stern command that it wanted me to do something. I awoke in terror screaming, “I saw it again!” My wife sat up in bed and held my sweat soaked body and we both trembled. She knew the image in the dream had returned. As it was now nearly dawn we drank some coffee and while she read a novel I continued writing the chronicle of my dream experiences before hitting the books for my classes.
The next day passed somewhat normally for us. Evening came and we tried not to discuss the dreams in the hope they were finished. Yet the entity of my dream was like a bully waiting in the dark and came again. This night’s dream started where the horror of the previous night ended. I noticed soft eerie lights which lit my immediate environment. I saw the face and the features which were all the same as before. This time I noticed a slender long neck that reached out from small shoulders to support its large head. The torso was clothed in a tightly fitting garment whose color was a pale tan lighter than its skin. The arms were slender like pipes and it had arms with very long fingers. I do not really remember counting how many fingers it possessed but it looked like either four or five. It was holding something.
The object it was holding was a thin linear, stick-like object about 15 inches in length. At either end were vertical pieces rising up a couple of inches. A type of string or wire attached the two rising end pieces. It held this object with its right hand and upper right arm. The right hand rose up oddly as though it was totally opposable to the arm. The other end of the object was pressed against the top portion of the being’s arm. In its left hand it held a type of bow not unlike one used in playing a violin. I cast my eyes upward to meet its eyes and for the first time I felt I was met with cordiality. The creature appeared to nod slightly and acknowledged a gesture of saying “yes.” With its left hand it crossed the bow to the string of the object held with its right hand and arm. It began stroking the object. Some of the areas stroked produced no audible sounds whereas other areas produced screeching noises. I again looked upward and met its eyes. The being now looked angry and I saw deep wrinkles in its forehead parallel to its menacing eyes. I again awoke screaming and trembling. Lynne held me and joined me weeping in fright. I went to our kitchen table and wrote down notes and attempted to draw pictures of the creature.
The next day we carried out our jobs and classes. We both had agreed to bury ourselves in routine. At the end of the day I again met her at the coffee shop near where she worked. We tried hard to laugh and talk of other things. Upon arriving at our apartment Lynne retired early. After studying and working on a lecture for the next day I came to bed. Of course the damn image met me as I slipped through the door of sleep. I felt it was male but did not know. I again saw the creature stroking the stringed object held in the grasp of its right hand and stroking it with the bow held in its left hand. Again its eyes were stern and as it stroked the string it motioned for me to look down by nodding downward with its head.
I now found myself sitting at a type of table or desk. It looked like a clear, smoky amber color that one could see through. I saw my legs and they were naked. I focused on the oddly shaped scar on my left leg that I got from falling onto barbed wire as a child at church camp. The scar had its same unusual shape. In the middle of the table was a smoky grey plaque which again could be seen through. It was a little smaller than a regular piece of paper about nine by seven inches. Somehow I knew I was to be looking at the marking on this plaque but I could not help but to look up into the eyes of the creature. It was angry and again motioned its head downward which I again took as a direction for me to look at the plaque. While I looked at the strange markings on the plaque the creature slowly rubbed the bow to the string.
I brought my eyes downward toward the table but along the way I got a good glimpse of my surroundings. I was sitting in an oval well about four or five feet long at its widest point. My eye level was approximately where the knees of the creature would be expected. There was a plastic-looking wall rising up from my well to about the waist of the creature. It followed the concave contour of my oval well. I do not remember being able to see through this wall. Estimating the height of the creature is a guess because I sat in an oval well but my approximation was that it was between four and five feet tall.
There was soft light coming up from the bottom of the well and I again could see that I was naked. There was also a type of soft light coming down from the top of the well which made me feel like a specimen under observation. There was yet another soft spotlight on the creature who I now felt was trying to become my teacher. This soft light lit up his face and upper body with clarity. I felt the presence of others standing to the right and left of the creature. While they stood in the dark I do believe I caught the outline of a couple of them.
I turned my focus to the plaque before me. It had numerous markings. Most of the markings were connected or close to a squiggly line slanting upward from left to right. It coiled in opposite directions at its top and bottom. While I looked at these markings I heard screeching sounds from the bow rubbing against the string. The sounds came in intermittent high and low frequencies. Often I would hear nothing and looked up to see the bow still rubbing the string. I understood that the creature wanted me to acknowledge when I heard a sound but I did not know how to let him know other than looking up at him. I also realized that I was to connect the sounds coming from the bow striking the string to the images on the plaque. I felt dumb and terrified. I looked up at the creature and saw those menacing eyes and wrinkled brow. I was disappointing him and he showed anger rather than tolerance. I once again awoke screaming and trembling in sweat. Lynne held me and asked if “it was the same guy.” I told her yes but I thought I saw others.
It was Saturday. I again wrote down what I saw as accurately as I could. I also tried to sketch drawings of me sitting in the well and the creatures standing above me. I then hit the books for a while and Lynne did some laundry in a room located down the hall. I was totally a mess from what was going on while Lynne had composure. She was happy to be going over to friends and hoping to forget what was happening for a while.
We returned from our friends to our apartment and went to bed with the hope all was behind us. However my dreams returned me into the same oval shaped well. I looked at the same plaque while the creature rubbed the bow to the string. I felt totally stupid. Fear made me continue to study the plaque while hearing the screeching noises produced by the bow rubbing against the string. I awoke with a headache and feared these sights and sounds.
I tried not to awaken Lynne. Despite the headache I became calm and thought how the missing hours in Virginia were being played before me. Somehow, time that was meant to be forgotten was becoming remembered.
The next day was Sunday. We went to the laundromat and stopped for a few groceries. We returned home and after folding and putting away laundry I returned to study. It was an uneventful day but that night’s sleep again returned me to the same well with my teacher/entity standing high before me. The screeching of the bow against the string continued while I tried hard to make sense of the connection of these sounds to the markings on the plaque. A type of breakthrough came in that some of the markings began to make sense. How this happened is unclear. I realized that some of the symbols on the plaque represented male or female, others indicated verbs, and there was a whole story being told in that one plaque. All this came with great pain and perhaps more from some mental impressions rather than noises from the sounds of the bow against the string.
The next day seemed surreal as I listened to lectures and taught my classes. It was a good day. I again met Lynne at the apartment at the end of the day and we discussed my latest journey into which both of us believed were real memories of my missing hours. I went to bed that night with great calm. As I entered sleep I again found myself in the well. Everything was the same. My teacher rubbed the bow against the string as I sat naked at the desk below him. This time there was a change in the demeanor of the creature. I felt far less terrified and the wrinkles in his brow were fewer. He almost came across as being satisfied or perhaps he had given up on me. Never-the-less, the creature remained menacing to me and never friendly.
I returned to my study of the markings on the plaque while seeing my naked legs below. The screeching played on but it did not bother me as much. Although they remained in shadows I sensed that the entities to the left and right of my teacher leaned closer to the railing that separated us. I peered at the markings on the plaque and in a brief epiphany their meaning came bursting through all at once. Every marking was to be understood simultaneously with all their interconnections comprising a complete story. The beginning, middle, end and meaning all became clear in an instant. There was no linear progression of concept. In languages spoken on earth, one word follows another to construct a mental image, concept or convey a statement. The plaque contained a story and a message that was to be absorbed and digested all at once.
While I am unable to convey many of the details of what I was able to absorb from these markings, the subject portrayed on the plaque was not all pleasant. I doubt if I ever gained great clarity in what they were showing me but I was left with impressions of humanity’s progress on earth with images of the wheel, gears, and an aircraft.
There were also strong images of catastrophes of stone and perhaps buildings and ice crumbling.
I have developed some conjectures from my experience. It should be noted that mine is but a single experience. With millions of planets, and life’s ability to adapt and evolve, there may be visitors from many places and perhaps dimensions that differ from one another greatly. Here I only speculate on what appears pertinent to my experience.
Everything is connected. My observations of the beige entity of whom I have spoken revealed a very small mouth and jaw as well as neck. It is unlikely that such a creature could do much in the way of chewing food let alone placing much food into its mouth. It looked much better suited to a liquid or near liquid diet. The narrow neck supports this hypothesis as does the small torso. The oral cavity of this creature was very small so that it may not be able to produce much variance in oral sounds. If speaking was limited there would not be too much need of ears or at least large ears that enabled earthlings to evolve to hear predators and prey. We needed large ears to hear the beasts upon which we fed. The alien I likely encountered would be unable to masticate meat.
If we accept the premise that the alien type which I apparently encountered had little verbal capacity it may be argued that their communication took place through other senses that are less developed in humans. One such sense is mental telepathy. Although this is not the place to argue for or against telepathy, many parents will sense the feelings of loved ones when they fall into danger. If you stop and think about it, these telepathic senses are not linear as in the form of speech but rather in terms of concepts and knowing. In the case of my likely alien encounter, they may have had little choice but to develop a higher level of transferring thoughts because of limited verbal abilities caused by physical limitations.
The plaque presented before me was not textual. There was no linear progression. It was taken in as a story or message all at once. The latter is consistent with my hypotheses above of their development of higher methods of thought communication and understanding.
Researchers around the world reach out to make contact with distant civilizations. However, the standard approach is a result of our evolved method of communication. One word follows another to eventually portray a story or message. Similarly, numerically we see three follows two which follows one and so forth. Even our mathematics used in efforts to contact other worlds is based on equations which follow in sequence.
It may well be that our efforts to reach extraterrestrials need to emphasize another type of communication. The binary methods of 0’s and 1’s used by researchers may get us noticed but perhaps leaves us sounding like a primitive race. We have attempted communication by using conceptual drawings portraying messages of whom and where we are in the universe. I believe this is a step in the right direction.
My experiences suggest that such efforts that allow the absorption of a message in its totality as instantly as possible may benefit our quests to communicate with other worlds.
