People often ask me why MUFON is not more actively involved in the disclosure process. By disclosure they mean actively lobbying our congressmen and women in Washington, DC, as well as the U.S. President to come clean on the UFO issue. Now obviously MUFON would love nothing more than for a sitting U.S. President to step to the podium and announce that we have been actively engaging ETs for the past 70 years and that treaties have been struck and whatever the rest of the story is that has been going on for so long. I just don’t think it is going to happen. Why? Very simply I don’t think any of our elected officials, including the President, have a clue as to what is really going on. This subject has been so deeply buried inside the intelligence machinery of the United States that even if our elected officials wanted to do something, I don’t believe they would have any success in finding out the answers we seek to be able to tell us. Sadly it appears that those in the know have so well hidden this from our current government that we essentially have a powerful working group (cabal) that is really running things. So much for representative government.
The 2014 MUFON Symposium is now fading into the history books and will go down as one of the more successful Symposiums we have ever experienced. What constitutes success? Well for one, nearly 700 people attended the event over the four days beginning Thursday, July 17th through Sunday, July 20th. Attendees included people from 40 states and 11 countries. Every eastern state was represented as was the entire west coast. Even North and South Dakota were represented! Countries outside the USA included Brazil, Canada, France, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Mali, Spain, Switzerland and Zimbabwe. In fact our largest international group was from our neighbors to the north in Canada with 12 people hailing from Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchawan.
I am often intrigued when communicating with scientists about the possibility of life on other planets. Invariably, they are of the opinion that more likely than not, there is a strong chance that there is life elsewhere in the universe. Immediately, thereafter, they qualify their view by verbalizing something to the effect that if an extraterrestrial (E.T.) did exist, that they could never find a way to be transported to Earth. There is a vast distance between the Earth and the nearest star. Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and not being able to travel faster than the speed of light are given as reasons that an E.T. could never get here. Many scientists then quickly forget the conversation and move on to more mundane musings. I dare say that 95 percent of scientists hold this view today. However, just a few years ago most of them were not even at the point of admitting that there must be life on other planets. In fact, going back a mere 25 years, the prevailing wisdom, on the part of scientists, was that Earth was unique. The thought was that there was a delicate balance between being the right distance from our sun, having the correct spin as a planet, possessing the proper content of oxygen and carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, along with a number of other factors making Earth unique in the universe.
MUFON is a scientific research organization dealing with a subject, UFOs, that is part of a larger field known as the paranormal. One of the raging debates within MUFON and in some ufology circles revolves around the question of “Are we a paranormal organization? Or not?” … and the short answer to both questions is YES! The real answer lies in one’s definition of paranormal as the word paranormal seems to have a different meaning to different people. And for many people it is a very emotional topic. Before we dive into the question itself, let’s start by seeing what the dictionary says about the word “paranormal”.
Dictionary.com defines it as;
“of or pertaining to the claimed occurrence of an event or perception without scientific explanation.”
These were the first words transmitted electrically by Samuel Morse via the telegraph on May 24, 1844 and no better words could be said today in regards to the impact of the new MUFON website and H2 television show “HANGAR 1” than these. Just as the telegraph and then the telephone transformed our world, so too will new information MUFON is receiving that is just now coming to light. The flood of new witnesses coming forward, many of them with military, law enforcement, and other professional backgrounds, is astounding and the number is growing. Investigations into the many phenomenal claims are just now beginning. I’ll share a synopsis of just a few of these stories with you this month and once investigations are completed, and if the stories hold up under scrutiny, you will be reading about them in future editions of the MUFON Journal very soon!
It often amazes me how our beliefs and worldview so profoundly shape our thinking and therefore our lives. I think back to my own sighting in 1965 and how on Monday morning I went to school and told my best friend what had happened. He stared at me as I related the story of a craft hovering ten feet off the ground no more than thirty feet from my brother and I, which then shot over the horizon at an incredible speed. As I finished my story he looked at me and said these words. “Would you like to go play baseball?” I was dumbfounded, didn’t you hear what I just said!? There was this craft and it was thirty feet from me defying gravity, with no apparent means of propulsion other than making a humming noise. The words shot through my head as I stood in disbelief, but I didn’t verbalize them as it was apparent that what I had just told him didn’t even register in his consciousness. It was so far outside of his paradigm of how the world works, so foreign to his belief system and worldview that to him it didn’t exist, even with his best friend telling him it did. I learned a valuable lesson that day…to keep my mouth shut, as what I had tried to share was apparently so far outside the bounds of present day beliefs in 1965, that it was best to keep it to myself.
MUFON was founded as a volunteer non-profit beginning in the late 60’s. Today we are still thriving as a non-profit organization based on the good work of volunteers around the world carrying out every conceivable aspect of our mission statement and goals on a daily basis. There is literally no-end to the enthusiasm and zeal displayed when it comes to the subject of UFOs and the personal time and attention MUFON volunteers spend seeking the truth about them.
MUFON’s mission statement serves as a guiding light for all that we do. This is what mission statements are supposed to do for most organizations, and yet I believe ours is more special than any other mission statement that exists to date. It is literally a beacon to keep us on track to achieve something great through the daily words and actions of each and every member of MUFON. The words “The Scientific Study of UFOs for the Benefit of Humanity” are not to be taken lightly. This statement was created, discussed, changed, discussed some more, and re-written at least a dozen times by the MUFON Board over a six month period before coming up with the exact words to describe what our purpose should be as an organization. These words are intended to spur us on in our quest for the truth and where that will hopefully lead us.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! And welcome to 2014. I’m excited at what the new year promises to bring in the way of new discoveries and opportunities for all of us at MUFON. Working at MUFON Headquarters the phone rings constantly with people wanting to talk about their UFO sighting or their recent alien encounter experience.
One day a few weeks ago I received an e-mail from a gentleman who said he needed to speak with me. I politely wrote him back and gave him my phone number and asked him to call me, which he did. He introduced himself as a commercial airline pilot with 48 years of flying experience who had had two incredible sightings during his career as an airline pilot that he now felt comfortable talking about since he was retired, but that was not what prompted him to call, it was a more intriguing story that I will share with you in just a minute.
